Our School Curriculum

At Coolangatta State School, we teach English and Mathematics using the Australian Curriculum Version 9 (V9).  This updated curriculum sets clear expectations for what students should learn at each year level across Australia.

In English, students develop strong skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They learn to understand and create a variety of texts, build vocabulary, and express their ideas clearly.

In Mathematics, students develop understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning across key areas such as number, algebra, measurement, space, and statistics.

Using the Australian Curriculum V9 ensures our teaching is consistent with national standards and supports every student to achieve their best learning outcomes.

We are currently transitioning to the Australian Curriculum V9 in all other learning areas.

Learning to Read with Sounds-Write

At Coolangatta State School, we use Sounds-Write, an evidence-based phonics program that helps every child learn to read, spell, and write with confidence.

Sounds-Write teaches students how the sounds in spoken words (phonemes) link to the letters and letter combinations (graphemes) in written words. Through daily, structured lessons, students practise blending sounds to read words and segmenting sounds to spell them.

This program is based on the science of reading and supports all learners—whether they are just starting to read or need extra help developing strong reading foundations.

By using research-backed, explicit teaching methods, our teachers ensure that every student is given the tools and support they need to become confident, successful readers.
