Our school

Coolangatta State School is an inclusive school catering for a diverse range of students from largely a mid to lower socioeconomic background.

Some 13% of our students are proud Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders. Increasingly students from multicultural and English as a Second Language backgrounds enrich our school.

We are a small, friendly school of some 200 students from prep to year 6.

Our school motto is "Work to Progress". We believe in the power of one, where each person, whether staff, student, parent or community member, works individually and collectively to make a positive impact on student learning outcomes. We have high expectations that every student will grow in achievement and meet with success as they strive to do and be their best.

We are focused on learning in a safe, supportive and disciplined environment where quality learning outcomes are sought for every student.

In partnership with parents, we endeavour to provide the optimal conditions to maximise the potential for learning through promoting and teaching healthy body and brain concepts, Smart Choice Food and the need to be active, energised and fit through Smart Moves. Our schools Values and Whole School Responsible Behaviour develop social, emotional and organisational skills and positive attitudes. Students are supported through proactive early identification for learning and behaviour.

The school follows the Australian Curriculum, Foundation Year to Year 6, delivered through the Queensland Curriculum to Classroom (C2C) Prep – Year 6 in the Key Learning Areas of English, Mathematics, Science with History with rollout of other subject areas in forthcoming years. In the interim, the Queensland Syllabus, Essential Learnings are followed in the Study of Society and Environment (SOSE); Technology, The Arts – music, drama, dance, media, visual arts; Health & Physical Education; and Languages Other Than English (Japanese).

Literacy and Numeracy and ICT are embedded across the curriculum along with Aboriginal Cultural Understandings and Asian Studies. The talents of our students are further developed through our choir and instrumental programs; an expanding sports program which includes surfing; and the opportunity for students to extend themselves through a broad range of academic excellence, elective programs and clubs. Our new Library / Resource Centre and Hall have made additional learning spaces that have enriched our curriculum offerings in a very pleasant and well cared for school environment.

We use a wide variety of teaching strategies that merge traditional elements into a progressive, modern curriculum which prepares our children for the future. The school is resourced by 21st century Information Communication Technology with a full class computer lab in the resource centre and a half lab in the enrichment room, Interactive Whiteboards in all classrooms and a ratio of computers in the classroom that enables ICT to be integral to teaching and learning.

We encourage parents to play an active role in their child’s education. Most importantly, we ask parents to talk to their about = what they are learning and to support them in improving their standards. We ask that parents keep up to date with their child’s progress through keeping in touch with their child’s teacher.  We invite parents to take part in special days and volunteer to assist with a variety of school activities as they are able. Through parent interest and involvement, we believe that students will thrive as learners.
