Queensland State Schools are provided with services of guidance officers. Guidance officers are experienced teachers who have completed additional qualifications in guidance and counselling or psychology. They have specialised training in areas such as behaviour management, psycho-educational assessment and intervention, educating students with disabilities, counselling, parenting, and child mental health.
The role of a guidance officer involves working with students and their parents or caregivers, in conjunction with teachers, specialist support staff and community agencies. Guidance officers assist in identifying factors that can be barriers to learning and development, and help plan interventions or differentiation that can help students achieve positive outcomes. Areas of support include a student’s educational, social, emotional, intellectual, physical, or behavioural development.
Referrals to the Guidance Officer are usually made by teachers through our Student Wellbeing Action Team or by parent request. Parents are welcome to ring the school and make an appointment to meet with the Guidance Officer directly.
